BITEMARKS EP by The Goner is released today on the wonderful australian Sideways Through Sound mp3-site. This is an exclusive web-release. Buy/Download here.

The ep contains three songs. These are three different journeys altogether:

“Bitemarks” (previously available only at The Goners myspace page) has been embellished with Petra Wahlgrens wonderful violin work and by this addition the gothic qualities of the song has been emphasized. The medieval and rhythmic atmosphere lands the song somewhere between Velvet Underground and Miranda Sex Garden.

“Lost Summer (instrumental)” (previously unreleased) is in itself a journey in three parts. From the melancholy chord organ beginning via psychedelic droning the song ends up in a tribalistic bodhran drum ridden pulse. And with this recording yet another new collaboration sees the light of day with the spacey vocal treatments by Philadelphia-based Bob Lennon.

“Oakmulgee Creek” (previously unreleased) contains countless journeys. It’s a ten minute meditation built mostly on improvisation. It ends up with field recordings from Alabama (in the month of June 2009).

“Behold A New Traveler is the second Deep Water entry from Sweden’s The Goner (after H.H. , last year’s 2-disc reissue of super-limited self-releases), and it marks a confident move forward on all fronts. In contrast to earlier work, most of the new Goner material is song-based (just a pair of instrumentals on hand here) and full-band powered, making for an album that’s both thematically unified and stylistically varied, from solo acoustic melancholy to wailing psych-rock. While it is still possible to draw lines from Behold… to the music of other contemporary folk-derived artists such as Six Organs of Admittance, Palace Brothers, and Stone Breath, at the same time the overall feel owes as much to Westerlund’s own cultural roots (recall that Sweden produced some legendary psychedelic rock & folk back in the 1970s), and the Goner’s creative voice continues to develop with a clarity of purpose that offers much and suggests more. Bitemarks is written by Daniel Westerlund. Flogger is a group effort written by the whole gang Westerlund/Knudsen/Bjerlin/Eriksson.

The future of these songs is as of now uncertain but the group is working on a new full length release. When and where it will come out is too early to tell.
